Hard Drive Sanitization
Deleting or reformatting a hard drive has been likened to sweeping dust under a rug. You may not see the dust anymore, but it’s still there. When a file is deleted, you are only removing the pointer to the file, with the data still residing in unallocated space on the hard drive. That means the information can still be retrieved by a savvy ne’er do well with software tools of the trade.
While there are several common ways to properly sanitize a hard drive, we most often physical destroy hard drives brought to us. This service is ideal for clients who have defective hard drives or are just too costly to repair.
If a hard drive needs to be securely sanitized, we can simply overwrite the hard drive’s data. This process replaces the stored data on a hard drive or disk with a predetermined pattern of meaningless information, which renders the data unrecoverable. Also referred to as hard drive sanitization, or “wiping” the data, this is an ideal approach when a client wants to be able to reuse or sell the hardware.
When you have sensitive information stored on a hard drive, it’s important that you have it properly sanitized before it leaves your possession. We can make sure that private information is removed permanently.
